Researching-Undergraduate Research

Why should you participate in Undergraduate Research?
There are several positive benefits and opportunities to participating in Undergraduate Research. First, participating in an undergraduate research project provides individuals with a chance to explore a topic that they are passionate about. Students can work independently or collaboratively with a group as they complete a research project. Undergraduate research also provides the opportunity to collaborate with professors and professionals in the field. This is a great opportunity to enhance one’s knowledge and stand out in the field. Participation in undergraduate research also establishes a solid foundation of research skills. Undergraduate research projects provide a time for students to learn the essential components of researching from thinking of a topic to presenting the research. These skills are skills that will significantly help an individual if they choose to go on to further higher education. These skills will also help in several future jobs.

What does one gain by completing an undergraduate research project?

Analytical skills, communicationskills (both oral and written), extended knowledge on a particular topic, familiarity with several research programs and techniques, networkingopportunities with professionals, professors, research team, and other individuals connected to research, the chance to see and carry out a project from a simple vision to an completed research project.

How do you get Started?
Talk to Professors in your department: Many professors are more than willing to help guide and assist students as they complete undergraduate research projects. In addition to guiding and assisting students, many professors are able to help students select a valuable topic related to their degree in which there is a great need for research.

Visit the URC: The URC is an abbreviation for the Undergraduate Research Center located on the second floor of Morris Hall. The URC can help students get started with the research process. They do several things such as hosting research workshops, help students apply for travel grants to attend conferences, and help students select and apply for conferences to present at.

Once I have a research project done, what do I do?
Present the Research: There are several opportunities to present research at a variety of locations. Every year MSU, Mankato sends students to the National Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR). This is a fantastic opportunity to hear students from all over the nation present their research. Students who attend this conference have the chance to share their research as a group or individually. Undergraduate research assistants from MSU, Mankato also have the opportunity to share their research on campus as well other state conferences.

What type of research can be done?
There are endless opportunities and topics to conduct research on. Research can be done in nearly every department. Students can also choose to do a qualitative research, quantitative research, or a combination of both.
